PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Tuesday marked the first day in Pennsylvania that citizens can apply for pre-verification for REAL ID.

As of October 1, 2020, Pennsylvanians will be required to have a REAL ID in order to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal building, unless they have an alternative form of TSA-approved identification, such as a U.S. Passport or military ID.

Though REAL ID will not be available until March 2019, pre-verification allows applicants to skip a step once that time comes, according to PennDOT's Alexis Campbell.

"Once REAL IDs are available next March, all those customers will need to do is go online to our website, which is penndot.gov/realid, and order their REAL ID. They won't need to come back into the Driver License Center, and their REAL ID will be mailed to them within seven to ten business days."

Steps to apply for pre-verification differ based on when a Pennsylvanian received his or her first PennDOT driver’s license. Those that received their license after September 2003 will only need to go online to apply for pre-verification, while those that received their license before September 2003 will need to bring a series of documents to be scanned at a Driver License Center.

Campbell said PennDOT changed the way they handle driver’s license registration in 2003.

"That's when we started scanning these same documents that are required for REAL ID to the customer's record. We likely have those documents already on file for them."

Required documents include:

  • Proof of Identity (Original or certified copy of a birth certificate with a raised seal or valid U.S. Passport)
  • Proof of Social Security Number (Unlaminated social security card)
  • Proof of all Legal Name Changes (Marriage certificate or court order issued by your county's family court)
  • Two Proofs of Current, Physical PA Address (Current, unexpired PA license or ID and a no more than 90-day-old bank statement or utility bill with the same name and address

A REAL ID costs a one-time fee of $30, compared to the cost to apply for a U.S. Passport book of $110. However, REAL ID cannot be used to leave the country.
