PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - An online petition urging Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf to allow salons to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic is gaining traction.

A petition started by “PA Salons Unite” over 5,000 signatures as of Friday morning.

In a statement, the organization says, “Governor Wolf, we urge you to not delay this any further. The COVID-19 crisis is not to be taken lightly, and we are grateful for those on the front lines. But, we need to immediately address the needs of our small businesses. We’re not asking for handouts, we want to open!”

They also say they are a heavily regulated industry and “are in the business of cleanliness.”

Retail stores and other businesses are allowed to reopen in areas in the yellow phase of the state’s mitigation plan, but places like salons, barbershops, nail salons, gyms and dine-in restaurants remain shuttered.

Earlier this week, Gov. Wolf told KDKA Radio that those businesses would only open once an area moves into the green phase.

Other states have plans to reopen salons and barbershops with regulations in place and salon owners in PA say they are facing tremendous economic pressure while closed.
