PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The 1.1-billion-dollar modernization of Pittsburgh International will also bring an upgrade of its Airmall.

That project will combine two terminals into one, multi-level building and will not only change the layout of airport shopping, but the stores themselves. One area focus in the project is to bring more local offerings to the Airmall.

“That allows for us to basically market the region from the moment people enter,” CEO of Allegheny County Airport Authority Christina Cassotis told Ellis Cannon in for Lynne-Hayes Freeland on KDKA Radio. “For the people that live here to offer them parts of the community that they do not have access to every day.”

Plans could include a dry cleaner and a 24/7 pet center. Cassotis said that the entire project is focused on serving every kind of passenger.

“You are a different person when you are going home to visit your family alone and when you have three kids in tow, and one of them is in a stroller,” Cassotis said.  “So there are different needs at different points along the journey, and we want to make sure that we are accessible.”

The new terminal is expected to open in 2023.
