PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pittsburgh area is now home to another astronaut!

34-year-old Warren “Woody” Hoburg graduated on Friday to officially become an Astronaut.

Hoburg is a Pittsburgh native that graduated from North Allegheny High School.

He then went out to earn his bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and earned a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California in Berkley.

Hoburg was joined by his parents Jim and Peggy and his brother, a chemistry teacher in Pittsburgh, during the graduation ceremony that took place in Houston.

Hoburg was an assistant professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT before he was selected to join the Astronaut Candidate class in 2017.

Hoburg is part of the 22nd graduating class since 1959 for NASA and was one of 12 people selected out of 18,300 candidates.

Now that Hoburg is a officially an Astronaut, the sky is literally the limit.

“We are going to back to the Moon, this time to stay,” Hoburg told Wendy Bell on KDKA Radio. “We have a plan in place to land American Astronauts on the Moon by 2024 and set up a presence there, it will be a proving ground for getting to Mars.”

Hoburg is the latest astronaut to be from Pittsburgh.

James Irwin, who grew up in Beechview, was the eight man to walk on the Moon. Judith Resnik, who grew up in Akron, OH and went to Carnegie Mellon, tragically died during the Challenger disaster in 1986. Jay Apt grew up in the East End and was a Space Shuttle Astronaut. Stephen Frick, who grew up in Gibsonia, was a Space Shuttle Astronaut. Mike Fincke is an International Space Station Astronaut who grew up in Emsworth and Heather Rarick is a former NASA Flight Director.
