Elaine Smith who has been owner of The Zenith on S. 26th Street in the South Side since 2003, says the surge in vegetarian/vegan restaurants in the Pittsburgh area is relatively new.

Smith adds a lot of establishments are only now offering vegetarian/vegan options because it is the trend. She says when she took over The Zenith the focus was on “not eating animals, not necessarily eating healthy.”

Smith says another reason she believes the non-meat diet is becoming more popular in Pittsburgh is because of the increasing age of the population adding that some doctors are advising older Pittsburghers to shy away from meat and focus on a more plant based diet.
