PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Port Authority says work to rehabilitate a good chunk of it's light rail fleet is scheduled to start soon.

Spokesman Jim Ritchie telling KDKA Radio, 55 cars, some of which date back to the 1980's, are slated to be overhauled over the next two years to keep them up to date.

"Their getting toward the end of their anticipated life span, so we want to do an overhaul of those vehicles, to make sure that they continue servicing the light rail system reliably for the next five to six years." said Ritchie.

The work is not expected to impact service.

"There will not be any shortages of vehicles, we're not going to be short on schedules so to speak. We're pulling a few cars out at a time, we're going to work on those vehicles, the rest of the system will be able to handle the posted schedule". Said Ritchie

Most of the work on the cars will involve making sure they are mechanically sound and ready for several more years of usage. He adds customers could notice some changes.

One of which is the flooring in the vehicles, So, when we're done we might end up making improvements or replacing the flooring in that passenger and cab area. The second thing is the seats, we're going to be looking at the seat conditions in the vehicles and their might be some changes and improvements to the seats as well." Said Ritchie.

Ritchie adds the Port Authority is also hiring additional mechanics to assist in the overhaul.
