PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Church leaders gathered at Steel Plaza downtown Friday for the Blessing of the Creche scene depicting the birth of Christ.

The Creche is a distinctively Christian symbol but this year Christian leaders gathered to pray for their Jewish brothers and sisters still reeling from the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting three weeks ago.

Catholic Bishop David Zubik said during the gathering, “As we continue to mourn the tragedy at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill a few weeks ago . . . our community needs this witness of peace and goodwill.”

Reverend Liddy Barlow of Christian Associates says the Creche sends a message of peace and hope.

“I think the space can be a real sanctuary, a place for some spiritual reflection in the middle of this city at such a busy time of year.”

The larger than life display is the only authorized replica of the Crèche that is displayed at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
