Rising Rap Star Jimmy Wopo Shot Dead In Hill District

The 21-year-old was shot while sitting in an SUV Monday afternoon

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh rapper Jimmy Wopo was fatal shot during a drive by shooting in the Hill District Monday afternoon right before 5 p.m. on Wylie Avenue.

The 21-year-old Wopo, whose real name was Travon Smart, was sitting in the driver’s seat of a Mazda SUV when he was shot.

 He was then rushed to UPMC Presby where police say he was pronounced dead right before 6 p.m. A passenger in the vehicle with Wopo was also shot and was last reported in stable condition.

The 21-year-old Wopo was gaining traction as a star in hip-hop music had collaborated with fellow Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa.  He was best known for his single “Elm Street” and was named to Complex magazine’s “Artists About to Blow” list.

Taylor Maglin, Wopo’s manager said in a Facebook statement, “I lost my brother today and it’s the worst feeling in the world.”
