PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – PennDOT crews are back at work trying to prevent future flooding along Route 28 between the 40th and 31st Street Bridges.

And it can’t come fast enough with more rain from the remnants of tropical storm Barry.

Assistant Executive for Maintenance Angelo Pampena tells KDKA Radio over the past couple of days crews have been, “clearing out all of the inlet tops, sucking out all of the drainage systems, making sure they’re clear and flowing and working properly.”

That section of Route 28 has flooded twice since late May.

The most recent was last week during heavy rains. PennDOT suspects dirt and debris coming down from the hillside above.

“Today we have an excavator going in trying to remove debris coming down from the hill. A lot of brick and block and dirt coming down off that hill,” said Pampena.

The work requires a single lane restriction southbound between the bridges Wednesday through Friday between 9 am and 3 pm.
