HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Schools in Pennsylvania will not extend past June 30.

While schools could possibly stay closed through April, the school year will come to an end June 30, no matter what.

PA Department of Education Secretary Pedro Rivera said doing a news conference Wednesday that by state statute cannot extend past June 30.

It was announced on Monday that schools in the state will remain closed through at least April 6, and some districts locally have announced they plan on opening a week or two after that.

When a date is decided when students can return to school, school staff will get two days to prepare their classrooms, cafeteria and other operations. Students will return on the third day.

“Protecting the health and safety of students, families, teachers and all employees who work in our schools is paramount during this national health crisis and we must continue our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus,” said Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera. “The number of positive cases increases daily and we’re seeing it spread to more counties. We must adhere to the social distancing guidelines. Extending the closure will help every community in its efforts to mitigate the spread.”

Rivera adds that the state’s 29 intermediate units “are ready to provide technical assistance to help develop continuity for education plans for all students.

“We know students are eager to engage with their teachers and return to learning,” he said. “Beginning tomorrow, all schools will be able to work with their local intermediate unit to develop instructional plans for all students, including those with disabilities and English language learners.”
