These adorable little lions are making history. That’s because they are the first of their kind to be born from artificial insemination.

Victor and Isabel were both last month in South Africa and are living healthy, normal lives.

The baby animals were conceived after more than a year of insemination trials.

And their births could be progress for the animals, who are considered “regionally extinct” in more than a dozen African countries, according to the African Wildlife Foundation.

Scientists say they hope that other endangered species, such as the snow leopard, could grow, from similar birthing techniques. There are only about 4,000-6,000 of them left in the world.
