Sen. Casey Joins Fight Against 3D Printed Guns

3D Printer and Gun

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — U.S. Senator Bob Casey and several other Senators filed legislation Tuesday that would block the online publication of plans for 3D printing guns.

The 3D Printed Gun Safety Act would make it illegal for anyone to intentionally publish a digital file online that programs a 3D printer to automatically manufacture a firearm.

The Defense Distributed files are already blocked in Pennsylvania following Sunday's emergency hearing in federal court. A multi-state lawsuit was also filed Monday attempting to block federal government settlements that would allow public access to the plans.

Advocates for the plans being made public say it does not infringe upon federal law in many cases, and is a First Amendment right.
