PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Open primaries could be coming to Pennsylvania.

The bill would allow independent voters on Primary Election Day to choose the party election in which they want to cast a ballot.

Chester County Democrat Andy Dinniman says there are more than 65,000 voters in his county alone.

“The great middle in both parties including independents feel that they’ve been left out of the political process and extremes have taken over,” said Dinniman“This bill gives a voice to that great middle.”

The Senate also approved a bill that would eliminate straight ticket party voting.

The bills now go to the house where it is unclear what will happen before summer recess.
