Sixth Probable Human West Nile Virus Case Identified In Allegheny County

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — The sixth probable human case of West Nile Virus this year has been identified in Allegheny County.

Six cases total were reported in the county from 2013 to 2017. West Nile Virus has been regularly found in Allegheny County since 2002.

The patient lives in Bellevue and is over the age of 50.

Human cases of West Nile Virus have also been identified in Point Breeze, Morningside, Highland Park, Carrick and Penn Hills. All patients were over the age of 50.

Mosquito season lasts through November and area residents are urged to use insect repellent and remove stagnant water where mosquitos breed.

Anyone who believes they have contracted the virus should contact their health care provider.
