PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Munhall native Gabby Barrett did not win American Idol but that isn’t stopping her from becoming a superstar. She and other contestants are preparing to perform as part of a 50 city tour across the nation.

“Top seven will be going on tour. The first tour date is July 11th and it goes all the way until September 16th,” said Barrett during a visit with the KDKA Radio Morning News.

Gabby’s father Blase says he first knew she had talent at an early age.

“Nine years old. I heard her singing some Adele music and I was like wait, wait, wait can you sing that again?”

There was always something about his daughter that he knew was special. Blase continued,

“I always thought she had the “it” factor. There are a lot of good singers but she’s had something since she was a little girl that radiates.”

During an American Idol performance she wanted to represent Pittsburgh by signing “Renegade” by Stix or Pittsburgh rock icon Donnie Iris’ “Ah! Leah!”

However, Journey’s own Steve Perry had different plans in mind.

“We submitted both of those songs and the story about Steve Perry was he didn’t allow anybody in the show to sing a Journey song. He contacted American Idol and said Gabby Barrett was the only one, and he wanted to meet her.”

Gabby then brought the house down with her version of “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Barrett says it’s hard to believe she is now getting to Face Time with superstars like Carrie Underwood.

“Looking back eight months [ago] I would’ve never thought, oh you’re going to sing with Carrie Underwood, you’re going to sing with Luke Bryan, you’re going to sing with Sugarland . . . it’s still hard to sink in now,” said Barrett.

Barrett will also be appearing at Heinz Field this year during a Steelers game.

“September 30th I’ll be singing the anthem and doing a little show,” Gabby said.

In just a few months Gabby went from a local girl to a nationally known figure. Who knows where her future will take her when she completes the American Idol Tour but the sky is the limit for this young talent.
