Station Square Derailment Result Of Broken Track

November 22, 2018 - 9:34 am

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — A broken track caused the August train derailment that closed the Station Square LRT Station for weeks, according to Norfolk Southern report.

Seven double-stacked freight cars fell from the tracks above the station along East Carson St. in the Aug. 5 incident, requiring a treacherous removal process and causing extensive damage to the Port Authority tracks.

The Federal Railroad Administration’s investigation is ongoing, but they released Norfolk Southern’s report Wednesday.

That report lists the cause as a “detail fracture from shelling or head check,” or a fracture that caused separation of the metal.

Port Authority is still calculating the total costs of repairs to submit to Norfolk Southern for reimbursement.
