PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Extra security officers were patrolling the Three Rivers Arts Festival early Monday.

That's because thousands of dollars worth of art was stolen from four booths Saturday night.

Festival Director Sarah Aziz told Larry and John it's the first time this has happened in the festival’s 60 years.

“We are known as one of the safer arts festivals and we’ve got additional security on now.”

It's not known how the thief or thieves removed several large items from the booths without being spotted.

Artist Lex Covato tells KDKA Radio’s Lynne Hayes-Freeland she is one of four artists who had artwork stolen.

Covato, who has participated in the Three Rivers Arts Festival for nine years now said she never expected any of her work to be stolen.

“It’s a very trusting atmosphere, I’ve never even thought that anyone would come in and even take small items and the security is supposed to walk the festival so I’ve always felt safe,” said Covato.

Covato believes there must’ve been a vehicle involved because pieces were too big to walk away with.

The three pieces that were stolen are 16 x 20 ft. and include an original entitled “Andy Loves Pittsburgh” featuring Andy Warhol.

“It is a fan-favorite and I mean the hours that you put into painting it, the memories that I have about my daughter next to me in the studio and me painting it and it’s just sad.”

Unfortunately Covato doesn’t have insurance and was more concerned about the strong storms that are known to roll though so she spent her money on stronger, reinforced tents.

“I was ready for one culprit and I got a completely different one.”

If you see the piece or know where it is, please contact the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust or Pittsburgh Police.
