PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Three companies in Western Pennsylvania are included in the next phase of medical marijuana grower/processor permits.

The State Department of Health says permits will go to Maitri Genetics, who'll build a facility in O'Hara Township, PennAlt Organics, which has plans to build a facility in Lemont Furnace, Fayette County.

The final license went to Hanging Gardens LLC, which will be located in Johnstown.

State Physician General Rachel Levine says it will give more patients access.

“This is going to expand the availability of this very important medicine and really allow this medicine to be available to patients throughout Pennsylvania,” said Levine. “The idea is that for the physicians that have registered for the program, this is one more tool in the toolbox as they treat these patients that are suffering from these conditions.”

Maitri Genetics says they hope to have their facility open within six-months.

Those three join companies already operating in McKeesport and Carmichaels.
