PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – So-called “lie and try” legislation to tighten one loophole in criminal background checks for gun purchases is co-sponsored by Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey.

The measure requires the FBI to notify state officials when it determines a buyer has lied about his or her criminal record on a gun purchase form.  It then would be up to state law enforcement to decide if they would prosecute.

“Someone who has committed a violent crime and then goes and lies on their form in an attempt to buy a gun might be someone we want to pay attention to,” Toomey, a Republican, told KDKA radio.

The measure is co-sponsored by Delaware Democrat Chris Coons. Several Republican and Democratic senators are supporting. Toomey says Senator Lindsey Graham who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee has promised action on the bill.
