WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump awarded the nation's highest military honor to Army Staff Sgt. Ronald Shurer II for braving heavy gunfire from militants to save lives during a 2008 battle in a remote area of Afghanistan.

Shurer was a senior medical sergeant in the special forces on April 6, 2008 when his team encountered machine gun and sniper fire and rocket-propelled grenades from militants. Several members of the team were severely wounded and became pinned down on a mountainside.

At a White House ceremony on Monday, Trump said Shurer treated his team members and then went back up the mountainside to rejoin the fight.

Schurer lives in Burke, Virginia, with his wife and two sons.
