PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – The Transportation Security Administration is working to reduce the long lines and wait times air travelers typically experience over summer holiday periods like Memorial Day. The TSA’s Mike England stood at Pittsburgh International in front of a table filled with illegal carry-on items confiscated over 24 hours.

“So we have a small machete here about a foot long or longer than a foot. We have an array of tools, a saw, a hammer, a wrench, also we have a couple of small hatchets here as well and quite a few hunting knives,” said England.

The TSA is preparing for a busy summer. 243 million passengers and crew are projected to pass through security checkpoints between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That’s about 4 million more than last year.

England says, “Nationwide, we’re adding over a thousand TSO’s (transportation security officers). We’re also adding 50 passenger screening canines and adding another check point lane right here at Pittsburgh International.”

By the way, England says the most common illegal carry-on items are liquids, gels, and aerosols. No liquids containers over 3.4 ounces are allowed or more than what will fit in a one quart clear plastic bag.
