UPMC Children's Hospital, Western Psychiatric President Accepts Job In Denver

Christopher Gessner will be the next president and CEO of University of Colorado Hospital

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The University of Colorado Hospital announced Christopher A. Gessner, the current president of UPMC Children's Hospital and UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, will be their next president and CEO, overseeing the Anschuntz Medical Campus, Broomfield Hospital, Highlands Ranch Hospital and other outpatient locations in the Denver area.  

Gessner, 52, has been with UPMC since 2000. He began his tenure with the hospital system serving as the executive director of Children's Community Pediatrics. In 2003, he became the vice president of ambulatory services for UPMC Children's Hospital before becoming chief operating officer in 2005. He was promoted to president of UPMC Children's Hospital in 2008 and assumed the same role for UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in 2014. He has also worked for Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Geisinger Health Sytem and Guthrie Healthcare System. 

A University of Pittsburgh and College of William and Mary graduate, Gessner serves on the boards of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation, the University of Pittsburgh Physicians, the Center for Emergency Medicine, the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation.

A press release from UCHealth says Gessner is expected to transition to his new role by late February. There is no indication from UPMC regarding who will be his replacement.
