The Pennsylvania Resources Council is offering online webinars for southwest Pennsylvania that revolves around conservation.

The webinars will not only conduct digital presentations but will also make compost bins and rain barrels available in an effort to promote the prevention of extraneous water usage and unnecessary food waste.

There are three different webinars that are being performed through the month of July.

Preregistration is required for all of the webinars.

The first digital seminar is for backyard composting and costs $70.

The course fee not only includes the information but also an 82-gallon compost bin.

The class hopes to teach the process and maintenance methods for composting and how to use the finished compost product.

Two different time and dates will be available for the Backyard Composting session:

    1. July 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
    2. July 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

After completing the course, individuals can then set up appointments at the Pennsylvania Resources Council’s North Side location (828 W. North Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15233) to pick up their bin.

    The hours for pickup include:

    1. Weekly Wednesdays (July 15, 22, 29; August 5) from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
    2. Weekly Fridays (10, 17, 24, 31; August 7) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The second webinar is learning how to harvest rainwater, redistribute into your own landscaping, and reduce watershed runoff pollution.

The course cost is $80 and includes the class and one rain barrel. There are also two classes for the Watershed Awareness webinar:

    1. July 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
    2. July 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The appointments for the rain barrels are the same as the compost bins — see above.

The third and final webinar is a free session that teaches Recycling & Waste Reduction.

The class will talk about general recycling questions and practices, navigating curbside collection, disposing of pharmaceuticals, and how to recycle the more difficult materials.

It is free of charge and will only be available once in July:

    1. July 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“PRC now offers numerous webinars as a more convenient, flexible way to educate Pennsylvania residents who desire to learn about how they can take part in PRC’s mission to prevent waste and conserve environmental resources,” according to PRC Education Specialist Nancy Martin.

“Individuals taking part in the Backyard Composting and Watershed Awareness/Rain Barrel webinars will receive the tools of the trade, specifically composting bins and rain barrels, following the webinars, so at this time we’re conducting these webinars for individuals living in southwestern Pennsylvania so that they can drive to a bin/barrel pick-up site soon after completing the webinars,” Martin continued.

Registration is open for the webinars on the Pennsylvania Resources Council website.
