LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. IT’S A COMMON EXPRESSION AND ONE THAT COULD MAKE US ALL BETTER IF WE FOLLOW THRU.  RECENTLY, A LARGE U.S. COMPANY DID JUST THAT.   TWO AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN WERE ARRESTED AT A PHILADELPHIA STARBUCKS STORE AFTER THE MANAGER CALLED 911. THE MEN WERE ASKED TO LEAVE AFTER ATTEMPTING TO USE THE RESTROOM WITHOUT MAKING A PURCHASE.  IN LOS ANGELES, A BLACK MAN CLAIMED HE COULDN’T USE THE BATHROOM AT STARBUCKS STORE WHERE A WHITE MAN WAS ALLOWED…NEITHER WERE PAYING CUSTOMERS. RACIAL BIAS IS A PROBLEM AND IT NEEDS RADICATED. STARBUCKS HAS STEPPED UP AND IS PUTTING ON A CLINIC ABOUT PROPERLY RESPONDING TO THEIR MIS-STEPS, THE PUBLIC CRITICISM THAT FOLLOWS, AND IS PROACTIVELY CHANGING THEIR CULTURE TO PREVENT IT MOVING FORWARD. FOR ONE AFTERNOON IN MAY, THE COMPANY IS CLOSING EIGHT THOUSAND STORES FOR RACIAL BIAS TRAINING. STARBUCKS STATED THEIR GOAL IS TRANSFORMING THE WAY IS DOES BUSINESS AND EDUCATING THEIR EMPLOYEES ON UNCONSCIOUS BIAS. WHAT OCCURRED IN THE PHILADELPHIA AND LOS ANGELES STARBUCKS LOCATIONS WAS WRONG AND UNACCEPTABLE. WHAT STARBUCKS IS DOING NEXT IS COMMENDABLE AND WILL BENEFIT US ALL. IT’S A TEXT-BOOK EXAMPLE OF LEARNING FROM OUR MISTAKES.
